Kalma is not only a practicing artist but also a dedicated educator, passionate about empowering other creators with the skills and conceptual frameworks of projection mapping and new media art. Her workshops are designed to be intensive, hands-on, and inspiring, bridging the gap between technical knowledge and artistic vision.
Teaching Methodology: motivation to learn, inspiration to create
Kalma's teaching philosophy is rooted in a "concept-first" approach. She believes that technology should serve the idea, not the other way around. Her workshops begin with creative fundamentals: how to see space as a narrative element, how to develop a visual concept that responds to an environment, and how to storyboard an immersive experience.
Only once a strong conceptual foundation is laid does the focus shift to the technical tools. This methodology ensures that students learn not just how to use the software, but why certain techniques are chosen to enhance their artistic message. She emphasizes a fluid and intuitive workflow within MadMapper and other VJ/projection tools, teaching participants how to think like a visual director and a spatial composer.
Since 2010 Kalma has been running the "Vjing and 3D Mapping Techniques Workshop", which has been specifically designed by the artist. The workshop covers Real-time video and Projection Mapping. It is a 4 days journey mixing theory and practice, where Kalma shares with the students her professional and artistic expertise.
She also worked as Video Instructor at the New York University Berlin and at the Deutsche Oper.
She is currently sharing her craft as a Guest Teacher at the Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK), leading a course called "Projection Mapping for Visual Artists" for the Art in Context Master's program.
